Algeria’s electrified rail network to reach 6000 km

Algerian Railways_imagesMinister of Transport Amar Ghoul said that the electrified railway network on the national level will reach a global length of 6000 km by 2017 under the presidential programme for the modernization and electrification of 12,500 km railway lines.
„Up to now, a network of more than 4000 km of this presidential programme has already been completed,” Ghoul said on the sidelines of the inspection of the completion of the Ramdane tunnel drilling in Oued Djer (West of Blida), coming under the project of electrification of the Blida-Ain Defla railway, over 56 km.
The presidential programme, spread over the national territory (from the north to the south via the High Plateaux), the minister added, will allow, upon its completion, to bring the speed of trains, currently estimated at between 80km/h and 160km/hr to 220km/h, with the goal to reach 350km/h in the future thanks to the introduction of high-speed trains. In addition, the programme will contribute to improve transport services, as well as opening up region that it crosses and the reduction of road accidents.
