On May 8, 2015, Sofia inaugurated the new extension of the metro system. The new 3 km line, with 3 stations, links two residential districts, from Mladost 1 to Sofia Business Park in the Mladost 4. The new line will carry more than 42,000 passenger per day.
The total cost of the project amounts to EUR 44 M or a little less than EUR 15 M per kilometer.
The metro extension project is financed under Operational Program Environment and co-financed under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
This stage of metro system development of is a continuation of the first metro diameter from Tsarigradsko Shose boulevard through Druzhba RD to the Sofia Airport as well as the extension after MS Mladost I in Mladost I RD along Al. Malinov boulevard to the Business Park in Mladost 4.
For Sofia, one of the major projects is the development of the metro. With a financing of EUR 400 Million for 2014-2020, an amount dedicated to the extensions of the network, Sofia wants to launch new metro projects. Funds are part of the financing package worth EUR 2 Billion obtained by the Bulgarian Government in December 2014.
