Kazakhstan needs to build a railway line that will run across the entire country from the border with China to the port of Aktau on the Caspian Sea, President Nursultan Nazarbayev said, Times of Central Asia reports.
“We need to build a new rail line that will cross the whole of Kazakhstan from the Aktau seaport to the border with China. Talks regarding this project are underway,” Nazarbayev said.
In the meantime, in 2015 the Aktau seaport will increase its cargo handling capacity from 18 million to 21 million tons, Roman Sklyar, vice president of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, explined.
The first stage of expansion of Aktau port will start in July 2015 and the project is to be completed late in 2016.
“Total investments in the seaport expansion project amount to 27 billion tenge (around USD145 million),” Amirbek Tulegenov, chairman of the Aktau Seaport free economic zone, was quoted as saying by Mangystau Online.
The project’s contractor is Kazakhstan Temir Zholy and the investor is Dubai Port World.
