Oman Rail, the organisation set up by the government to oversee the establishment and operation of a national rail network, has begun evaluating the potential volumes of freight that will be transported by rail over the long-term, a high-ranking executive said according to Zawya electronic news edition.
The national rail system will not only play a pivotal part in supporting the government’s strategy to create a logistics-centric economy in the Sultanate, but also help fuel the exponential growth of the freight market.
We are also are uncovering new potential markets for the country that are sitting idle at the moment, and we plan to use the technology of the train to concentrate on delivery of the product.
„We are using that technology to achieve greater proportions — imports or exports — that are not capable by truck. Ports cannot just handle hundreds and hundreds of trucks every day, but they can handle one or two trains. One train alone can eliminate approximately 300 trucks. So if we get 2 or 3 trains in there, we can eliminate 600-900 trucks. We are using (rail) technology to replace the old technologies that were in place that limited the capabilities of the country to export its products”, John Lesniewski, COO of Oman Rail said.
Oman Rail, he said, plans to grow the market for the mining sector, in ports for loading and off-loading of cargoes, and also for logistics support activities in general — initiatives that will help drive jobs growth even in the short-term.
