The authorities from Portugal recently approved the privatisation of CP Carga, the national rail freight operator. The Portuguese Government also decided to privatise EMEF, the company responsible for the maintenance of the railway infrastructure. For now, the specification for the tender is unknown but the bid will allow the entire taking over of the two national companies. The transaction would be completed before October 2015.
In 2014 CP Carga transported 9.2 million tonnes of freight, 11.3% more than in 2013. This allowed reducing of the deficit from 11.3 million in 2013 to 3.6 million in 2014.
