Ostrava is the first city in the Czech Republic to have a regular rail connection to an international airport.
The new railway route is 2.9 kilometres long and connects the airport with the town of Sedlnice by a railway linked with the main railway corridor between Ostrava and Prague and Ostrava and Brno.
The reconstruction of 5.5 kilometres of the existing railway and construction of the new stretch of the railway was funded mainly from the EU funds and amounted to 940 million crowns (EUR 34 million). The railway also connects the city of Ostrava with the Mošnov industrial zone, which currently employs around 1,500 people. The number of people working in the area is expected to increase by another thousand in the next two years.
