Construction of the much talked-about Beijing – Zhangjiakou high-speed railway will start in 2015. The project was scheduled to begin in August 2009, but it has been stalled because of a variety of changes made to high-speed railway construction plans by the Ministry of Railways.
In November 2014, a feasibility report on the construction of the Beijing – Zhangjiakou Railway’s crossing of Badaling Mountain was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.
According to the plan, the 174-kilometer-long high-speed railway will have nine stations, running from Beijing North Station to Zhangjiakou South Station. A branch line to Yanqing Station will also be built. The full railway, which includes 70-kilometer section through Beijing, will be completed in four and a half years.
Construction of the extension of the Beijing – Tianjin Interurban railway, the Tianjin – Baoding railway and the Zhangjiakou – Tangshan railway will also start in 2015. The construction of the three railways will greatly reduce pressure on Beijing as the railway hub and will provide more convenient service to passengers travelling to the south and southwest.
