Mexico’s communications and transport ministry (SCT) is carrying out 126 public infrastructure projects across the entire country, but of the total, only two have actually been completed, BNamericas.
These infrastructure works are being built with public resources and private funds, and although some projects are scheduled to be completed in 2020.
These projects are part of Mexico’s national infrastructure program (PNI), which involves total investments of 7.7tn pesos (USD 515bn) in the run up to 2018.
Of the total 126 public infrastructure works, 20 initiatives works in the rail sector, and the rest of them include roads, maritime and airport sector.
In the railway sector, the SCT is developing 20 public works projects in 12 states of the country. Of this amount, only two projects have been completed, one of which is a new international rail bridge in the border state of Tamaulipas. The 996million pesos (USD 65.8 million) project covers 11km.
The other project that has been finished is a 30km urban rail system in the city of Zapopan in Jalisco state, which involved an investment of 347 million pesos (USD 23 million). The rail sector has nine projects being implemented, six in the planning stage and three being tendered.
