In 2014, RZD spent 76.5 billion roubles (USD 1.16 bn) on purchasing new locomotives. In total, the company purchased 660 units of traction rolling stock, including 411 electric and 249 diesel locomotives.
Under its 2014 investment programme, RZD modernised and extended the service life of 564 diesel locomotive sections and 151 electric locomotive sections.
The decision to extend the life of locomotives was taken after an evaluation of the technical condition of each individual unit, as well as the economic viability of using upgraded rolling stock rather than purchasing new equipment.
RZD’s locomotive modernisation plan is aimed at improving the operational reliability of our engines, equipping them with modern management and security systems and improving working conditions for the engines crews.
