The new rail track bypassing Ukraine and spanning about 140 kilometers will be the first stage of a southern high-speed rail project, the Russian Railways report. The Russian 2015-2017 budget envisages approximatively 55 billion rubles (EUR 701 mln) for the project.
The construction will be initiated this year and is scheduled for completion by 2018, Russia’s minister of transport said.
The new rail track will connect Zhuravka station in Voronej region with Millerovo in Rostov region, said Russian Railway’s report.
Currently trains traveling to the south of the Russian Federation go through Ukraine. The bypass idea existed long ago, but became a need in 2014 for political reasons.
