Egypt plans to upgrade Cairo Metro

Cairo_Metro_Sadat_plathomeEgypt’s Ministry of Transport is working to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce fuel consumption in Cairo and other major cities by upgrading the public transit system and encouraging citizens to use alternative methods of transportation.
Younis Ibrahim of the Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operation said his company is working to introduce new metro carriages for businessmen and interested citizens that include premium services such as the Internet.
A ride in these metro carriages would cost 10 pounds ($1.40) per ticket, and seat reservation would be made via smartcard, he told Al-Shorfa.
To increase revenue in order to finance a metro upgrade, Egypt is signing contracts with advertising companies to place ads inside metro stations, so 20 new trains can be commissioned by the beginning of next year, Ibrahim said. Work also is under way to complete a third metro line and start a fourth, he added.
