The Japanese Transport Ministry is screening a plan submitted by JR Tokai to construct the Linear Chuo Shinkansen line.
The plan envisages the opening of the magnetic levitation train line between Tokyo and Nagoya in 2027 and extending the service to Osaka in 2045. The maglev train, which uses superconducting technology, is capable of running at more than 500 kph, linking Tokyo and Osaka in about an hour, compared with the two hours and 25 minutes required for the fastest Shinkansen train currently in service.
Nevertheless, the maglev train line project is estimated to cost as much as ¥9 trillion (EUR 66 B) in total. The transport ministry should decide whether to approve the project from a comprehensive perspective, taking into account its position within a national transport policy and factors such as profitability and the environmental impact.
