Transnet faces maintenance backlog

Transnet has a current infrastructure maintenance backlog of R30-billion (EUR 2B). Most of this is in signalling and trackwork, said South African public enterprises minister Lynne Brown.
Transnet needed to spend R13.9 billion (EUR 977M) on trackwork and R11.7 billion (EUR 822.5M) on signalling.
Expenditure required in other areas to “catch up” includes R907 million (EUR 63.7M) on freight rolling stock, R37 million (EUR 2.6M) on communication systems, R2.4 billion (EUR 168.7M) on railway yard upkeep, R349 million (EUR 24.5M) on harbour infrastructure and R5 million (EUR 351.5thousand) on pipelines.
