The National Land Commission (NLC) has listed 46 parcels of land it intends to acquire for construction of the Nairobi-Mombasa standard gauge railway. The Sh327 billion (EUR 2.9B) project will be constructed by China Road and Bridge Corporation from scratch, meaning that the railway will be on its own route between Nairobi and Mombasa (the first phase), aside from the existing rail network between these two cities.
Out of the 46, the biggest chunk will be obtained from East Africa Portland Cement Company, from which NLC intends to acquire 82.2 hectares.
Last month, Infrastructure Principal secretary John Mosonik said the construction of the 472-kilometre railway is likely to start after the land issues are sorted out.
