ATFER: Romania needs intense promotion to develop the railway freight transport

“Romania enjoys a good position in the European transport system. However, freight traffic is decreasing. Unfortunately, Romania does not manage to express its intention to develop railway freight transport. The traffic drop makes us believe that even Corridor IX that crosses our country leaves us outside traffic, but simply follows the Danube route. Examples prove us that due to a poor representation of Romania in the EU, we are not involved in the traffic system, but only routes are important. We, as operators, we have tried to get European and international implication, but intense promotion is necessary. The fact that authorities invest in the modernisation of Corridor IX proves us that are chances still to impose our position in the European transport system”, declared Cornel Garoseanu, President of the Romanian Railway Carriers Association at the Railway Days, the Wider Black Sea Area Railway Investment Summit, held on 7 and 8 October in Bucharest and organised by Club Feroviar and AIF.
Garoseanu underlined that Romania is the EU country with the fewest logistics fleets and the projects generated for the construction of other fleets don’t take into account the economic situation of the regions or their location compared to pan-European corridors. “The fact that they are built with European financing is a good signal, but the Transport Master Plan does not include such investments which are important for the freight transport system. ATFER and Club Feroviar have been and are still trying to bring the authorities’ attention on these aspects. It seems that at European level as well, the construction of a real transport system does not take into account Romania’s economic situation and needs regarding railway transport. As long as railway projects are not well-defined, road transport is still allowed to develop”, pointed out Garoseanu.
