German and Danish ministers immerse mock-up tunnel

FEHMARNBELT DAYS 2014 10/2014Although much remains to be done before construction of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel begins next year, both German and Danish government officials are confident that the project is on track.
As a symbolic gesture, the Danish Transport Minister Magnus Heunicke and the German Minister of Justice and European Affairs in Schleswig-Holstein Anke Spoorendonk met in the Town Hall Square in Copenhagen to build a scale model of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel. The model was a 1-100 scale replica of one of the 89 tunnel elements that will make up the Fehmarnbelt fixed link.
“Unlike the construction of the real tunnel, what we’re about to do here couldn’t be simpler. If building the tunnel was as easy as this, we wouldn’t have to wait until 2021. However, they say that “good things come to those who wait” and I think this is an apt description of the project,” said Anke Spoorendonk.
“The purpose of Fehmarnbelt Days is to create more debate about this immense project, the world’s largest immersed tunnel. A huge project that will – when completed – make it possible to travel from Copenhagen to Hamburg by direct train in just two and a half hours. That’s something I’m really looking forward to,”  said Danish Minister.
Construction of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel is expected to begin in summer 2015 and to last until late 2021.
