In July, China and Iran officially discussed the finalisation of the agreement on the financing of Iranian railway development projects. Part of these discussions have been focused on financing the construction project of a tram line in the city of Tabriz, located in the north-west of Iran and the fifth most important city for the economy.
“The tram in Tabriz will benefit from high standards regarding the travelling speed and the safety of passengers. It could run at speeds of 80 km/h and it could run no matter the meteorological conditions”, commented on the discussions carried out one of the advisers of the Chinese company CITIC Group. The Chinese company is actively involved in the development of projects regarding the construction of a metro transport network and the supply of electric buses in order to reduce pollution in Tabriz.
The tram line could replace 50 buses and 200 taxis in Tabriz with considerably reduced costs.
Iran is interested in developing railway projects by attracting foreign financing, and discussions with China have focused on signing an agreement”, declared Seyed Massoud Nasr Azadan, Deputy Director of Construction and Development of Infrastructures Transportation Company (CDITC) of Iran.
Tabriz is the second most polluted city in Iran and the use of poor quality gasoline, as well as the presence of a large number of old cars have increased by 72% the pollution level of the Iranian city.
The agreement signed with the Chinese is very important as it enables the construction of the first tram line in Iran.
