Bucharest metro operator, Metrorex, has presented its investment projects for 2021 – 2030, under which it will build 94 km of new lines and 90 stations, of which 76.5 km represent new lines and more than 17 km of metro extensions. The programme has been presented by Mariana Miclăuș, General Manager of Metrorex at Railway Days summit, organised by Club Feroviar in Bucharest on 29-30 October.
“Until 2030, we plan to build five new lines and to extend four existing lines to deliver better connections within Bucharest and link the metropolitan area with the city centre. The new metro connections will provide passengers with increased access to metro network, fast services and will also have a huge impact on road traffic by shifting towards metro services including to city’s public transport system,” the General Manager of Metrorex said.
One of the most important project which is currently under construction is Line 6 which will provide connection to Henri Coandă International Airport. The project is split into two sections, one from 1 Mai station (on M4 line) to the new Tokyo station (6.6 km and 6 stations), and the other one will link Tokyo station with the airport (7.6 km și 6 stations). The entire line will be 14.2 km served by 12 stations and has an estimated value of RON 9.3 billion (EUR 1.86 billion).
In June 2024, Bucharest metro operator and the Ministry of Transport signed a EUR 291.5 million financing agreement from the Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan for the first 6.6 km section. The 1 Mai – Tokyo section, which is also financed by JICA with 15% of the eligible costs, is expected to be completed in 2026. In 2022, a EUR 242.7 million contract has been signed with a consortium of Alsim Alarko Sanayi Tesisleri and Makyol Insaat Sanayi to perform works for the first section of Line 6.
For the 7.6 km Tokyo – Henri Coandă Airport, which is co-financed by JICA, a consortium of Gülermak – Somet was awarded the contract for design and resistance structure works. Metrorex is currently evaluating the bids for design and execution of architectural works, rail infrastructure, electromechanical installation. The other two main contracts for which the tenders should be issued include desing and automatisation works for traffic safety and rolling stock procurement.
The construction of the second section of Line 5 is another important project that Metrorex is carrying out. The 5.4 km section will be served by 6 stations between Eroilor existing station and Piața Iancului. For this project, Metrorex has completed the technical design documentation and the award documents for the procurement of the works. In addition, ongoing activities cover the urban area plan, the environmental agreement and construction permit, while funding application is currently under development.
The first section of Line 5 with a length of 7 km and 10 stations was inaugurated in September 2020.
The construction of Line 4 between Gara de Nord and Gara Progresu is also an important project Metrorex is implementing in partnership with Transport Ministry, as well as with the 4th and 5th District City Halls of Bucharest and Ilfov county authorities. The line will be 11.9 km long with 13 stations and is estimated at RON 14.34 billion (EUR 2.86 billion). In October 2024, Metrorex shortlisted three bidders for Gara de Nord – Gara Progresul metro line project.
In June 2024, Metrorex and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure signed a financing contract for this project which will be co-financed by the EU’s Cohesion Fund with EUR 1.8 billion, the state budget will cover the project with a funding of EUR 319.5 million while EUR 4.2 million is the co-financing of the beneficiary and EUR 413.7 million is the non-eligible value of the project.
Until 2030, Metrorex plans to build two other lines totalling 45 km and 45 stations. Line 7 sill be 26 km long with 27 stations and will link Bragadiru and Voluntari, two towns in Ilfov County, in Bucharest metropolitan area. Line 8 will be 19 km long with 18 stations and will provide connections between the districts of Crângași and Dristor (in Bucharest) and will be constructed as a semi-ring in South area of the city.
The extensions of Bucharest metro network totalling 17.3 km of new sections and 14 new stations involve the Line 2, Line 4 and three extensions of Line 3.
Extension projects:
- Line 2 – 1.6 km and 2 stations between Pipera (existing station) and Petricani;
- Line 4 – 2 km and 2 stations between Străulești (existing station) and Mogoșoaia Park train station;
- Line 3 will be extended by 11.36 km and will have 8 new stations. Between the existing Păcii station and West Ring Line, a 3.7 km new extension and 4 new stations will be built. A 3.3 km extension with 2 stations will provide connection between Militari district and Chiajna (in Ilfov County) and a 4.36 km new section with 2 stations will link Militari and Latin Quarter.
Bucharest metro network is 78 km long with 64 stations and 6 depots and is operated by 82 trains of which 15 IVA trains (on Line 4), 44 Bombardier trains on Lines 1, 3 and 5) and 23 CAF trains which operate on Line 2. A EUR 103.2 million contract has been signed with Alstom for the supply of 13 six-car metro trains for the Line 5 Drumul Taberei – Iancului section. Under the contract Alstom also delivered a simulator for staff training.
