PKP Intercity obtains funds for new locomotives and railcars

PKP Intercity has signed an agreement with the Center for EU Transport Projects (CUPT) for non-repayable support in the amount of PLN 2.162 billion (EUR 500 million) from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO). The maximum amount of expenditure to be co-financed is PLN 2.297 billion (EUR 530 million).

The level of support from EU funds is over 94 percent of eligible expenditure. The money will be used for seven ongoing tasks covering the purchase of modern locomotives and the modernisation of various types of railcars. Two tasks related to the purchase of 56 locomotives are worth over PLN 1 billion (EUR 230 million). The value of investments related to the modernisation of carriages amounts to PLN 1.2 billion (EUR 280 million). The condition for obtaining an EU grant is the completion of all projects by mid-2026.

EU money for Polish industry

Contracts for carriages and locomotives covered by support from KPO are implemented exclusively in Polish rolling stock factories.

These are five plants: Poznań-based Fabryka Pojazdów H. Cegielski, Bydgoszcz-based Pesa, Pesa Mińsk Mazowiecki and PKP Intercity Remtrak. These plants are involved in the modernisation of railcars. In turn, the Newag factory from Nowy Sącz supplies modern electric locomotives.

What PKP Intercity routes will benefit from the new rolling stock

The cars and locomotives financed by the KPO will be used to service routes practically all over Poland. These will be inter-provincial lines as part of a public service agreement concluded with the Ministry of Infrastructure. The route map will include large agglomerations such as Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław, Białystok, Gdańsk and Poznań.

There will also be smaller cities such as Piła, Hajnówka, Lubartów, Sieradz, Krotoszyn, Kalisz, Lubliniec, Zakopane and Piotrków Trybunalski. The list is very long.

EU support for the development of Polish railways

When PKP Intercity completes the investments for which it signed an agreement with CUPT, the total sum of all EU funds used since the company’s inception will amount to over PLN 5.2 billion (EUR 1.1 billion) for investments worth over PLN 11 billion (EUR 2.5 billion).

They included the modernization and purchase of 846 carriages, the purchase of 96 electric locomotives, the purchase of 60 electric traction sets, including 20 Pendolino trains. These funds also allowed for the purchase and modernization of 43 diesel locomotives.
