GSM-R construction on Pardubice-Jaroměř line completed

East Bohemian rail

Czech rail infrastructure manager SZ has completed the construction of GSM-R system on East Bohemian rail line from Pardubice via Hradec Králové to Jaroměř.

This is a necessary condition for the introduction of the European ETCS safety system, the installation of which has already begun between the two East Bohemian centres. Operation under his supervision will increase the safety and smoothness of railway transport. The construction of GSM-R took place starting in April 2022.

The GSM-R digital radio system was acquired not only by the entire line from Pardubice to Jaroměř, but also by the section from Hradec Králové to Praskačka on the connection between the regional metropolis and Chlumec nad Cidlina.

The workers built technological objects, including the necessary antenna masts, and laid optical cables. The construction also included the installation of the necessary technology, the construction of dispatch terminals and the supply of GSM-R mobile radio stations for employees of SZ.

The GSM-R system is used for signal transmission within the unified European security system ETCS. Its installation is already underway on the line from Pardubice to Hradec Králové, and in 2028 the next section to Jaroměř will follow.

Kontron Transportation and Teplotechna Ostrava are construction contractors under total costs of almost CZK 243 million (EUR 9.6 million). The installation of GSM-R system on the East Bohemian rail line Pardubice – Hradec Králové – Jaroměř was co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Transport Programme 2021–2027.

The total amount of eligible costs amounts to more than CZK 209 million (EUR 8.2 million) with a 85% European co-financing representing CZK 177.7 million (EUR 7 million). The national funding was provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.

In February 2024, ZS completed the reconstruction of another part of the busy railway line connecting the two regional cities. The works have been finished in two and a half years between Pardubice-Rosice nad Labem and Stéblová.

New platforms and a pedestrian underpass were built in Rosice nad Labem. The reconstruction of the stop Pardubice-Semtín has been completed and the new stop Stéblová obec serves passengers. All level crossings were also modernised.

Pardubice and Hradec Králové, two regional cities with approximately one hundred thousand inhabitants, are subject to long term heavy traffic loads. The reconstruction of the existing line and the construction of the second track in the section to Stéblová will significantly facilitate travelling and make the ecological railway more attractive.

The work was carried out by the companies Skanska and Elektrizace železnic Praha. The total investment costs of the construction amount to CZK 3.26 billion (EUR 128.6 million).

In May, as the modernisation of the Pardubice junction progresses, the double-track operation started between the main railway station and Rosice nad Labem. The reconstruction of the entire section will enable modern trains to run at speeds of up to 160 km/h after the introduction of ETCS.
