Three shortlisted bidders for Bucharest metro extension

Gara de Nord – Gara Progresul metro

The local authorities of the 4th District City Hall of Bucharest have announced that three bidders have been shortlisted for Gara de Nord – Gara Progresul metro line project.

The contract has an estimated value of EUR 2.5 billion and covers the design and construction work for the new line.

The bidders are:

  • Gülermak Spółka z Ograniczoną Odpowiedzialnością for Lot 1;
  • Dogus Insaat ve Ticaret (leader) – GP Group JSC – Trace Group Hold for Lot 1; and
  • Construcții Erbașu (leader) – Concelex – Bog’art consortium for Lot 2.

The bidders comprise 56 nationally and internationally companies and their bids will be analised in the coming period. The winners of the contracts will be announced by the end of this year with works expected to be launched in 2025 and scheduled to be completed in five years.

Lot 1 covers the construction of a section from Gara de Nord to Eroii Revolutiei station and it is estimated at RON 5.2 billion – 6.1 billion, VAT excluded.

The Lot 2, to be constructed from Eroii Revoluției to Gara Progresul is estimated at RON 4.4 billion – 5.2 billion, VAT excluded.

The 12 km Gara de Nord – Gara Progresul metro line will have 14 stations of which 13 will be new and one existing station (Gara de Nord 2) and will cross three districts of Bucharest (1, 4 and 5) as well as Jilava commune, in Ilfov couty, in south metropolitan area of Bucharest.

The line will also have a new depot which will be constructed in Jilava commune. The stations will be constructed considering the latest requirements for fire safety and will be adapted to passengers with reduced mobility. They will be also equipped with passenger protection systems, including glass panels and automatic platform edge doors, as well as with modern passenger information systems.

In June 2024, Romania’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Metrorex, the Bucharest metro operator, and the 4th District City Hall signed a financing contract under the Transport Operational Programme 2021-2027.

Of the EUR 2.5 billion value of the project, EUR 1.8 billion will be the EU co-financing through the Cohesion Fund, EUR 319.5 million will be covered by the state budget, EUR 4.2 million is beneficiary’s financing while EUR 413.7 million is the non-eligible value of the project.

The new line will extend the existing 7.4 km line from Gara de Nord (Bucharest Central train station) to south area of Bucharest and will be operated by 15 metro trains.
