Copenhagen M5 line

Metroselskabet awarded Rambøll Systra joint venture, with Gottlieb Paludan Architects as sub-consultant, a contract to develop basic design studies for the transport system, operation control centre and maintenance site of the future Copenhagen M5 line.

Together, they will prepare the specifications for this line and provide technical advice on the specification of trains, rail infrastructure and all technical subsystems, as well as identifying all interfaces for the project. The assignment also includes advice on the operation, maintenance and upkeep of the metro.

The contract includes, among other things, technical consultancy in relation to requirements specification for trains, railway infrastructure and the technical subsystems as well as interfaces for the construction part of the project. In addition, the joint venture will provide consultancy services regarding operation and maintenance of the metro.

“We have been looking forward to having the advisers on board the project and look forward to a close collaboration on developing the systems and operations for the future metro line in the capital. Rambøll Systra JV’s insight into the complexity of the task gives us great confidence that together we will could carry out this important social task for the benefit of the metropolitan area”, said Russell Saltmarsh, project director at Metroselskabet, the Danish capital’s public metro operator.

Copenhagen M5 line will ensure metro to both existing urban areas as well as to new districts in Østhavnen and will have up to 10 stations. The route is still under discussion and is considered to be built either the south or the north and it is expected to be circular with around ten stations and will relieve congestion at the port. The southern solution can also help solve the capacity challenge in the current metro across the harbour. The new metro line will help reduce the number of daily car journeys, with a positive impact on the climate.

The metro company has an ambition to reduce the climate impact from new metro lines, including M5, with 50% compared to previous lines. At the same time, there must be a focus on the customer experience, the Metroselskabet’s contribution to the city, including social sustainability, as well as the work with safety and the working environment both in construction and operation.
