The European Commission and PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe signed grants agreements of over EUR 360 million from the EU Connecting Europe Facility under the 2023 calls for proposals for two rail strategic projects. Thanks to EU support, investments will be implemented on another section of Rail Baltica in Poland and the Skierniewice – Łuków railway line.
“The grants awarded by the European Commission for the implementation of projects confirm that we approach the construction and modernisation of infrastructure in a comprehensive manner. I am convinced that thanks to these financial resources, our infrastructure will be even more competitive,” Polish Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Arkadiusz Marchewka said.
A EU funding of EUR 223.12 million has been provided for works on the E75 rail line, the Rail Baltica route on Polish territory, for the Białystok – Osowiec route, Białystok – Knyszyn section.
The second project with a European funding of EUR 145 million covers the works on the Line No. 12 Skierniewice – Łuków (C-E20), section Czachówek Wschodni – Pilawa.
The two rail strategic projects involve the modernisation of 55 km in total, as well as modernisation and reconstruction works for five stations and five stops which will al be adapted to passengers with limited mobility.
The works on the Białystok – Knyszyn rail section include, among others, the modernisation of 23 km of tracks, including the construction of a second track, which will improve the capacity of this route. The project also includes the construction of eight grade-separated intersections, which will improve travel and increase safety on the international corridor. Białystok Starosielce and Dobrzyniewo Duże are the two stations that will be comprehensively modernised and three passenger stops will be improved (Białystok Bacieczki, Fasty and Borsukówka). At all these stations and stops, the platforms will be also adapted to passengers with reduced mobility. The main benefit of the project will be enhanced capacity of rail traffic for freight and passenger transport for the cross-border connection of Rail Baltica between Poland and Lithuania.
The project on the Line no.12 includes comprehensive modernisation of the 32 km Czachówek Wschodni – Pilawa section, excluding the Góra Kalwaria – Kępa Gliniecka section which is co-financed by CEF through Military Mobility tool. As part of the investment, three stations (Czachówek Wschodni, Góra Kalwaria, Osieck) will be rebuilt and Warszówka and Jaźwiny stops will be modernised. Passengers will gain comfortable travel conditions and easier access to the railway services. The platforms will be higher, which will make it easier for passengers to get on and off the trains. The stations and stops will be equipped with new benches, shelters, passenger information and adapted to the needs of people with limited mobility. The project will increase the capacity of rail traffic for freight and passenger transport in the TEN-T network in Poland.
Under the 2023 CEF Transport calls for proposals, the EU allocated EUR 7 billion to support 134 projects while rail has secured the largest share, of 80%. Recently, the EC has launched the CEF calls for proposals
CINEA has launched 2024 CEF Transport calls for proposals for which EUR 2.5 billion are available to build and modernise transport infrastructure part of TEN-T.
