Progress Rail and PT Kereta Indonesia (PT KAI) have signed a maintenance service agreement for 35 EMD freight locomotives which were delivered in 2022 for transport in South Sumatra, Indonesia.
The six-year contract includes a major overhaul on the 35 EMD GT38AC diesel locomotives and covers all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance parts, plus 24/7 technical support in multiple locations.

This maintenance service agreement is a key component in achieving the levels of reliability and performance required of our fleet, while enhancing the technical capabilities of PT KAI’s local workforce,” Didiek Hartantyo, president director of PT Kereta Indonesia, said.
This is the third MSA Progress Rail has signed with PT KAI for the CC205 class. The first contract was signed for 50 GT38ACs in September 2013, and later extended to cover 55 locomotives. Another six-year maintenance service agreement was signed in 2020 for the 55 units, including bogie overhauls and a major 12-year overhaul of the locomotives.
In April 2020, PT KAI and Progress Rail signed a contract for the supply of 36 EMD freight locomotives, expanding the Indonesian public railway operator’s existing GT Series fleet. The new fleet is specially designed to meet environmental and geographical characteristics Southeastern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa regions.
In February 2024, PT KAI awarded Progress Rail another contract for the supply of 54 EMD GT38AC freight locomotives which will increase transport capacity and reduce impact on the environment, delivering sustainable transport services. The locomotives are reliably operated with biodiesel blends up to B35 in Indonesia. Features include a proven eight-cylinder EMD 710 engine and durable AC traction, along with the operator cab and car body designed for improved visibility.
The new locomotives will be delivered at the beginning of 2025.
