RTS Operations and Siemens Mobility signed a contract to design, install and commission a CBTC signalling system and Platform Screen Door System on the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link.
Siemens Mobility will utilize its Trainguard MT solution to install the CBTC technology on 4 km of rail line, as well as at one station and control center (OCC) on each side of the border. In addition, platform screen doors will be installed at both stations and a depot will be established on the Malaysia side that will be able to accommodate 8 four-car trainsets.
Trainguard MT is the Siemens Mobility high-performance CBTC system which lets operators maximise their network capacity and throughput. The radio-based technology provides real-time data on vehicle position and speed conditions, allowing system operators to safely increase the number of vehicles on a rail line.
This will be the first ever case of CBTC technology being used on a cross border rail link. The line will also be equipped with GoA 4, the highest grade of automation that allows for trains to be automatically controlled and operated.
The 4 km system connecting Johor Bahru, Malaysia and Woodlands, Singapore will be operated by RTS Operations, a joint venture between Singapore rail operator SMRT and Malaysian public transport company Prasarana. The rail link will cross the Straits of Johor via a 25m-high bridge between Singapore terminus in Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar station in Johor Bahru.
In May 2021, RTS Operations has awarded nine contracts worth a total of approximately RM1 billion (USD 236.4 million) for the RTS Link. Four of the contracts are for core systems, CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive was awarded the train contract, and Sapura Rail Systems won the contract for the communications system and the integrated supervisory control system. Siemens Mobility Sdn Bhd and Siemens Mobility Pte Ltd won the signalling and platform screen door contract. The remaining five contracts were signed for non-core systems.
In 2020, the prime ministers of Malaysia and Singapore relaunched the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link after its suspension in 2019 due to political reasons and the pandemic.
The project will be implemented into two stages. The first phase covering the construction of the civil structures will be implemented from 2021 until 2024. Between 2025 and 2026, the major construction woks will start for the construction of the signalling and telecom systems.
At the end of 2020, LTA, the transport authority of Singapore awarded Penta-Ocean Construction a SGD 933 million (USD 683.7 million) contract for the construction of the new rail connection.
The cross-border connection is expected to become operational in 2026.
