Russian Railways environmental plans envisage a RUB 4 billion (USD 57.45 million) investment to improve the environmental safety and preserve the natural systems in 2020.
By the end of 2020, the company will implement air protection measures to reduce the emission of harmful substances by 13,000 tonnes from stationary sources such as boiler rooms by 1,000 tonnes and from mobile sources like locomotives and road vehicles by 12,000 tonnes.
The energy-saving and energy efficiency programme will allow RZD to reduce its CO2 emissions by 714,700 tonnes. The company intends to save 797 million kWh of electricity, 65,600 Gcals of thermal energy and 41,400 tonnes of diesel and 28,800 tonnes of coal.
To reduce the impact of noise on the environment, under the Russian Railways environmental plans more than 3,000 km of continuous welded rails will be laid, 23,000 km of rails and 1,000 switching points will be polished and 18,000 noise-attenuating cushion bolsters will be fitted. The company will install more than 98 km of noise-absorbing screens.
On water protection, RZD will adopt measures to reduce the discharge of undertreated wastewater by 426,000 cubic metres.
As the company is also responsible for waste management, to handle further disposal, 570,916 tonnes of waste will be transferred, which include 129,031 worn wooden sleepers. Its subsidiaries will acquire 1,659 containers and waste storage containers, and 4.5 million biodegradable packets, oil-absorbing sorbents and sorption mats. In addition, 401 waste-storage sites will be equipped. It is also planned to abolish 7 facilities with accumulated environmental damage while 199 are undergoing pollution at the moment.
Russian Railways will also continue its to separately select the collecting paper, glass and plastic waste.
By the end of this year, the company and its divisions will plant 351,900 trees and shrubs along railway lines, at municipal entities and in specially protected natural areas.
